FUNDS FOR THE SCHOOL

COMBINED CONCERT GIVEN. CARNIVAL QUEENS BENEFIT. The concert rranged.for presentation in the Workers’ Social Hall last night to augment the funds of the respective queens in the West End School queen - carnival competition was eminently successful, and met with good support from the public. The concert took the form of a competition between parties representing each queen, and the fact that a time limit was set for ea ch group completely eradicated any possibility of a lagging programme. The variety and general excellence of the numbers was the subject of favourable comment on all sides. The judges were Messrs. F. W. G. MeIxod, G, H, White and E. Holden, and at the conclusion of the performance Mr. McLeod announced.the result as follows: Kowhai (80 points) 1 Rata (75 points) .-. 2 Miro (74 points) 3 Nikau (65 points) ) 4

Prior to announcing the result of the competition, Mr. McLeod remarked that it had been a splendid evening’s amusement, and the quality of the latent’ talent unearthed was surprising. There were many difficulties facing the judges, owing to the various angles from which the performance could be' regarded. Some programmes were good right through, but had too much "sameness.” Others again had.too many vocal or instrumental items. The number of weak items was surprisingly, few. The last programme given, that of the Kowhai group, only wanted ths inclusion of an Instrumental number to make it quite good enough to be half the programme in a town hall concert chamber. Tho programme:.-, in the order in which tl’?y were given, were as follow: Rata.—Saxophone solo (Mr. George), solo (Miss D. Loveridge), violin solo (Miss Kirkland), song (Mona Martin),, instrumental item (the Martins), song (Mr. Baird), violin solo (Mr. Leach). Nikau.—Piano duet from Gounod's 1-aust’ (Mr. and Mrs. H. Skelton), song (Mrs. K. Jones), elocutionary item, “Rubenstein at the Piano” (Mr. H. Gil-more-Smith), long (Mr. Quin), musical medley “House to Let” (Mrs. K. Jones). Miro.-—Violin solo (Miss Ross), dance (Leila Raynor), solo (Mr. Baird), Monologue (Mrs. Kircher), solo (Mrs. MacDonald), conjuring act (Mr. South). Kowhai.—Song (Mr. Driver), Russian dance (Pat Durdle), recitation (Mrs. Hills), solo (Mr. Higginson), sketch “Where Are You Going My Pretty Maid” (six children), song (Miss McDonald), dance (Elwyn Riley), girl’s recitation. The performers were entertained to supper after the concert. It is estimated that the nett proceeds of the concert will be between £l2 and £l3. Ten per cent, of this amount goes to the funds of the winning group, and the remainder will be equallly divided between the four groups.
