CURE FOR ECONOMIC SLUMP MR. AMERY ISSUES APPEAL GREAT EXPANSION LIKELY By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright, Received June 22, 9 p.m. London, June 21. Mr. L. C. M. S. Avery, Secretary to the Colonies, speaking at the Empire Federation of Chambers of Commerce luncheon, reiterated that the only effective remedy for the present economic difficulties lay in the development of inter-imperial trade, which was capable of infinitely greater expansion than foreign trade. Empire-wide trade had almost died during the war-time, he said, but had now recovered to pre-war dimensions and substantial expansion was likely,, particularly in heavy wines. The Empire’s business communities must get together. “Why.” Mr. Acery asked, “should we not have a federation of fruit, tobacco and dairy producers and grain growers; in short, an Imperial farmers' union to reassert ior agriculture its proper place, thereby applying the only true remedy for the persistent manufacturing crisis?
