LOCAL AND GENERAL

A 50-acre farm in the Normanby district was sold! recently for £75 an acre. An idea of the inflated . values during the “boom’*'is given when it is known that this property was sold for £175 a few years ago. Nearly three months ago shops in the town and the Kawaroa Park bungalow were ’broken into, and as a result of police inquiries it is understood that three boys, whose ages range from 14 to 16 years, are to be charged with the offences. The drivers of the two ears that collided on the Junction Road on Monday evening were ’Mr. F. Waite, engineer to the Inglewood County Council, and Mr. John Lehrke, of Frankley Road. Though the cars were damaged the occupants were unhurt. Mr. F. Reade Wauchope, of Christchurch, is to be asked to act as producer of "A Runaway Girl,” at present being; rehearsed by the New Plymouth Amateur Operatic Society. The production will be staged towards the end of the year. Mr. Wauchope has recently returned from abroad and is known as a skilful producer. He achieved outstanding success in producing for the Gisborne society. The sum of £470 18s was taken at the doors at the Taranaki Agricultural Society’s winter show last week, thus exceeding the record of 192(5, when the receipts from this source were £468 Bs. It has to be remembered that there are 800 members, and these and their families are admitted free. The result is the more creditable in view of the fact that owing to wet weather the takings on the opening day were £l7 less than last year, “There will be some interesting developments when the board meets in Wellington this week,” said Mr. Goodfellow at Te Kuiti on Monday evening. “Had the board, after abolishing price fixation, given a week’s notice to end pooling as well many Dominion companies would have re-established their own selling agencies and fixed their prices, thus strengthening the market. That is what my company purposes doing as soon as pooling is abolished. At present we have at Home a form of control giving no price lead. Those voting for the retention of pooling as it now exists do not necessarily do so in the interests Of -the industry.”
