ELTHAM SCHOOL COMMITTEE. THE MONTHLY MEETING. (From Our Own Reporter.) The monthly meeting of the Eltham School Committee was held last night. Present: Messrs. W. Ricketts (chairman), A. Ware, C. Horrocks, J. Phillips, R. Kemp, A. C. Sorenson, the Rev. W. W. Avery and E. Bary (headmaster). The headmaster reported that the attendance for the quarter ending March 31 was 380.3, the average roil number for that period being 413.8 and the average attendance for the quarter was 91.9 per cent. With the proceeds of the successful swimming carnival, held on March 17, basket ball posts and rings, basket balls and footballs had been purchased, so that the sports programme for the school was now fully organised. The senior instructor in agriculture (Mr. Ridling) had visited the school during the last two days and had been very pleased with the grounds improvement. It was his wish that senior classes should enter into some experimentaj work outside and the headmaster asked the committee to arrange to have the necessary area cf ground prepared. The appreciation of the staff was expressed to the committee for the interest taken in the school during their term of office, as that was the last usual meeting of the committee before the householders’ meeting in May. The report was received. " The secretary advised that a credit of £2 15s 7d remained from the recent picnic, and the credit balance at the bank stood at £l2 13s 4d, while £42 10s capitation had been received, and £79 7s 10d was due for subsidies.

Mr. Bary advised that the Education Board were sending down more desks for the school as soon as they were made, and the visiting committee reported that the front lawns neede-’ top-dressing, and stated that Mr. Ridling had advised the purchase of a motor lawn mower at a cost of about £57. Messrs. Ricketts and Sorenson were appointed the visiting committee for the ensuing month. It was decided to ask the Education Board to erect a permanent fence in front of the school. The Taranaki Education Board advised that Miss Phyllis Steadman had been appointed assistant at the Eltham school, as from May 1 next. The committee decided to have an experimental plot prepared, the matter being left in the hands of the chairman and headmaster. A resolution was passed that the football ground and lawns should be topdressed, and the matter of sowing the lawns was left in the hands of Mr. Phillips. The chairman and secretary were instructed to make enquiries in connection with a British motor lawn mower. Mr. Kemp reported that the takings at the baths for the season amounted to £2O 10s 7d, and, after the caretaker’s salary had been paid, a credit of £4 Is 6d remained. A donation of £5 was made to the swimming baths caretaker for his services during the season. DENTAL NURSE FOR ELTHAM. APPOINTMENT IN FEW WEEKS. “A dental nurse will be available for the Eltham dental clinic in a few weeks’ time,” staled a letter from the Department of Health read at the Eltham School Committee meeting last night. “If you will advise me when the room is ready for use, 1 shall have a dental equipment forwarded, and will arrange a definite date for a dental nurse to commence duty,” continued the communication. The secretary advised that the room was now quite ready for the establishment of the clinic and the Taranaki Education Board had been informed of this, and would take steps to advise the department.
