QUARTERLY COURT FIGURES

INCREASES IN NEW PLYMOUTH. That work in the Magistrate’s Court at New Plymouth continues to increase is shown by- the returns for the quarter now available. Since the end of the last period the pensions work has been transferred to Wanganui, so no figures concerning this- aro now issued here. The returns are as follow, the figures for the corresponding three months of last year being show-n in parentheses: Civil Business.—Number of sittings held,- 16 (13), presided over by Magistrate; plaints entered, 388 (305); amount sued for, £4383 17s 4d (£4650 12s 9d); amount involved in cases tried. £lB9l 18s 9d (£2924 Ils 9d); amount recovered, £lBlB 7s 6d (£2756 Ils 9d); cases tried, 7 (4); distress warrants issued, 19 (7); judgment summonses issued, 81 (58); warrants of committal issued, 10 (5); summonses and other processes served by bailiff, 245 (224); warrants executed by the bailiff, 26 (22). On the criminal side of the business there had been 37 sittings (38), 23 of which were presided over by the Magistrate, and 14 by- J.P.’s. The number of criminal cases heard totalled 173, of which 171 were against males aud two against females. The fees and fines collected in stamps amounted to £335 Is Gd (£3lO 13s); criminal fees paid in stamps, £4O 5s (£B2 9s); fines paid in stamps, £lOO 8s (£164 3s Cd); total, £475 14s 6d, (£557 5s 6d). License fees paid in stamps totalled £5 14s.
