BILLY BOYS’ WORKSHOP

MAKING A SIMPLE EASEL. The easel illustrated in Fig. 1 will be found very useful if any member of your family takes an interest in drawing and painting. Obtain two pieces of batten for the front legs, each about 2 inches wide, 1 inch thick, and 3 feet to 4 feet long; and one other piece for the back leg which must be about 3 inches longer than the others. Round off all ends off the front legs, but only round off the lower end of the back leg, leaving the top of it square and flat. Cut a piece of wood about 2 inches wide, 1 inch thick and 9 inches long, for the top cross piece, and to it screw the front legs as shown in Fig. 1, and as seen from the back in Fig. 2. One stout screw in each is sufficient, as the legs should be movable so that when the easel is not in use it can be folded flat. Get an ordinary strong hinge about 2 inches long and screw one of its plates to tlie back of the cross piece

as shown in Fig. 2; then screw the other plate to the inside of the back leg so that the leg can shut up against the cross piece and thus bring all three into line.

Drill four holes, 3 inches apart, through the "front legs as shown in Fig. 1, and make two pegs of wood about 5 inches long to fit closely into the holes. Then take two pieces of the batten, each about 24 inches long, drill three similar holes, about. 114 inches apart, in each end of one of them, as shown in the illustration, and nail the second piece to the upper edge of the first.

Fix the shelf thus made to the legs of the easel by putting the pegs through the holes' as shown iu Fig. 3, and note that the width of the easel is adjustable, and also the height of the cross piece or shelf , by putting the pegs in suitable holes.
