THE SPIRIT OF LOCARNO
NECESSITY OF GOOD FAITH THE POLICY OF FRANCE APPROVAL OF HOLY SEE By Telegraph— Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Jan. 3, 5.5 p.m. Paris, Jan. 2. Le Temps expressed pleasure at Cardinal Magflione’s unreserved approval of the Locarno policy and says: "The Holy See recognises that absolute sincerity and a desire for peace is dominating France’s foreign policy.” The Journal Dee Dc'bats says: “France has been so often misunderstood that she will the more appreciate the homage rendered by so venerable and authoritative a voice.” Both papers congratulate M. Doumergue on stressing the fact that peace is dependent upon the good faith of all parties. Received Jan. 3, 5.5 p.m. London, Jan. 2. The Paris correspondent of The Times says that unusual interest is attached to the speech by the Papal Nuncio, Cardinal Maglione, at M. Doumergue’s New Year reception to the diplomatic corps. Cardinal Maglione, obviously Instructed by the Holy See, proclaimed the Pope’s approval of France’s policy, resulting in the pact of Locarno, and Germany’s entry into the League of Nations.
“This,” says the correspondent, “is a remarkable testimony to M. Briand, and will embarrass the Catholic Nationalist press, to which his policy is distasteful.”
