CHAMPIONSHIPS AT GISBORNE. NEW PLYMOUTH SUCCESSES. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Gisborne, Jan. 1. The principal attraction to-day was the first day of the Ngatapa sports, held at the Park Racecourse, Gisborne, at which the New Zealand professional championships were decided. The weather was fine and the attendance totalled between four and five thousand. The course was in good condition. The fol-, lowing are the results of the professional running championships:— 100 Yards Championship.—A. Berry (Gisborne) 1, T. Williams (Gisborne) 2, G. Murland (Gisborne) 3. Won by two ,and a half yards, with one yard between second and third. Time, 10 2-ssec.
440 Yards Championship.—W. C. Preston (Whangarei) 1, G. Murland (Gisborne) 2, J. Hurrey (Gisborne) 3. Won by five yards, with three yards between second and third. Time, 53sec. A protest was put in against Preston on account of alleged incorrect performances at the time of his nomination. The rotest will be considered by the Poverty Bay •Centre of the New Zealand A.C.U. on Monday morning. One Mile New Zealand Championship. —W. C. Preston (Whangarei) 1, L. Carrington (Pokaka, Main Trunk) 2, M. Johns (Gisborne) 3. Won by 20 yards, with 50 yards between second and third. Time, 4min 37sec. One Mile New Zealand Cycling Championship.—J. Henderson (Christchurch) 1, W. Mackie (Christchurch) 2, S. McCann (New Plymouth) 3. Won by a wheel, with five yards between second and third. Time, 2min 43 l-ssec. Five Mile New Zealand Cycling Championship.—J. Henderson (Christchurch) 1, M. Mackie (Christchurch) 2, S. McCann (Nw Plymouth) 3. An exciting finish, Henderson winning by two yards, with McCann a yard behind. Time, 15 min 25sec. Results of other principal events were:— Mile Cycle Handicap (Open).—J. Henderson (scr) 1, W. McKie (Christchurch) 2, A. Ross (Gisborne) 3. Two Mile Ngatapa Wheel Race open, first prize £5O, second £lO, third £3.— W. Brewster (New Plymouth) (200yds) 1, S. McCann (New Plymouth) 2, E. Hamilton (Gisborne) 3. Time, smin 12 see. 135 Yards Sheffield Running Race, first prize £5O, second £lO, third £3. — First heat: E. Williams (Byds) 1, A. E. Ingrain (104yds) 2; time, 13 l-ssee. Second heat: J. Hurrey (10yds) 1, A. Berry (3yds) 2; time, 13 3-ssec. Third heat: R. Thomas (Syds) 1, J. Bradley (Syds) 2, time, 13 3-ssee. 220 Yards Handicap (open).—J. Hurley (Byds) 1. H. Wallis (scr) 2. W. C. Preston (10yds) was first past the post, but a protest was put in against him on the grounds of incorrect performances at his nomination and alleged competing under an assumed name. On the first ground Preston was disqualified for the race and the race to the second man, Hurrey. In regard to competing under an alleged assumed name it was decided to refer the matter to the Povertv Bay Centre of the New Zealand A.C.U. 880 Yards Handicap (open).—M. Johns (30yds) 1, N. Wilton (60yds) 2, R. Quick (30yds) 3. Time, Imin 58? sec. 120 Yards Amateur Handicap.—Final: O. Paltridge (scr) 1, L. Sutcliffe (3Jyds) 2, F. Dobbie (lOJyds) 3. One Mile Amateur Handicap.—V. Cloustoii 1, R. Brown (4yds) 2, S. Jones (70yds) 3. Time. 4min 58 3-ssec. Amongst the Highland dancing events was the. Seantrubhais Poverty Bay championship, which was won by Hazel Lee (Napier), with E. Sharpies (Gisborn) second, and Zeta Spink (Hastings) third.
