HOURS OF WORK
INQUIRY NEARING END. THE EFFECT ON INDUSTRY. By Telegraph—Press Amu.—Copyright. Melbourne, Dec. 14. The inquiry into the effects of the fortyfour hour week is drawing to a close. Counsel for the various respondents, addressing the Arbitration Court, argued that the productivity of Australia had so far increased as to warrant a reduction in the hours of labour, and to render any loss caused thereby, unimportant. The other side contended that this was completely refuted by the facts, and that the country’s financial and economic condition did not warrant such a reduction. It would gravely retard the development of the primary industries and handicap competition in the world’s markets.
