ENTERTAINMENTS.

THE PEOPLE’S. "THE MAN IN THE SADDLE.” The story of an intensely ambitious young cowpuncher with a tremendous urge to play the hero, who bungles, blunders and stumbles his way to a great success, characterises Hoot Gibson’s latest Universal Jewel, “The Man in the Saddle.” The story, which is crammed with incident and humour, reveals a big ranch that is engaged principally in the entertainment of tourists, who desire to see the great West as it really is. A number of fake hold-ups are staged to add effect and give thrills to the city folk. Hoot plays the part of a “dude” cowboy and puts over some genuine comedy stuff, but is still the smiling, hardriding Hoot favourite of countless heroworshippers. This star attraction is wonderfully supported by a News and a Star comedy and a Wanda Wiley comedy. To-night is the final screening for Fred Thomson and Silver King are on the screen to-morrow. EVERYBODY’S. A FEAST OF JOY AND FUN. It is agreed by all who have seen it (and two very -large audiences have already had this pleasure) that the comedy programme which screens at Everybody’s for the last time this evening is entertainment reaching the highest possible standard in pure comedy. “The Palm Beach Girl,” played by Bebe Daniels, is quite the speediest riot of highgrade fun and wild adventure and is especially charming for the beautiful scenes of the lovely Florida beaches, and the blaze of life and colour at the Miami Sands Regatta. The latter half of the evening is devoted to Syd Chaplin, who as "The Man on the Box,” is involved in a series of ludicrous escapades, much funnief and more wildly exciting than his recent cyclone of merriment, “Charley’s Aunt.” Syd, as the ladies’ maid, is much peppier and far more up-to-date than the old lady from Brazil. Much more could be said as to the merits of these two brilliant attractions, but to those who wish for a full two and a half hours’ of sheer delight, two facts only need be stressed; to-night (Wednesday) is the last screening, and reserved seats may be secured at Collier’s.

BEAUTY CONTEST

An advertisement of more than usual interest appears to-day in our amusements column, to the effect that the “world’s beauty contest” will be decided at the New Plymouth Opera House on Monday evening next. It appears that the spirit of Christmas is abroad with intent to do as many good turns as it can for those who are not unduly blessed with this world's goods. To provide a little pleasure for those whom adverse circumstances have deprived of the little extra money which would ensure a merry Christmas, to buy toys for sick kiddies, to bring a little sunshine into homes which have a crying need for it, the commercial travellers and warehousemen are arranging a spectacular beauty contest, and the New Plymouth Savage Club have undertaken to crown the winning beauty at the Opera House in the evening. On Monday afternoon the beauties will parade in Devon Street attended by their maids of honour, and the public will be asked to vote for the beauty of their choice. Considerable secrecy surrounds the identities of the competing beauties.
