DEATH OF WAR VETERAN
MAJOR F. W. GASCOYNE. By Telegraph.--Press Association. Hastings, Dec. 13. Major Frederick William Gascoyne, a veteran of the Maori War, died this morning at the age of 88 years. He was born at Cawnpore in 1838 and came to New Zealand with his father, Colonel Gascoyne, an officer of the East India Company, who settled in the Nelson district in 1853. Major Gascoyne joined the Colonial Defence Force in 1863, and subsequently joined Captain Fraser’s expedition for service on the East Coast, and took part in many important engagements in the Maori War. Major Gascoyne was for a time Magistrate in the Chatham Islands, after which he settled in Hastings, where he lived in retirement for close on 30 years. Miss Gascoyne, who has resided in Hastings with Major Gascoyne since his wife’s death two years ago, lived in New Plymouth before that time.
