A Melbourne cablegram announces the death of Mr. W. G. .Spence, formerly Postmaster-General. A cablegram from Paris reports the death of M. Jean Richepin, poet and dramatist. A Paris message says ’ that Lady Parr is suffering from a serious attack of influenza and her husband is still unable to return to London. Mr. E. C. Westbury, for the past seven years assistant accountant to the New Plymouth Borough Council, has been appointed Town Clerk of Waihi. Mr. G. V. Matthews, chief accountant to the New Plymouth Borough Council, was runner-up for the position of clerk to tho One Tree Hill Borough, Auckland, the commencing salary of which is £5OO per annum. There were 160 applicants for the position. The friends of Mr. G. W. Rogers, of Opunake, who recently underwent an operation at the Bowen Street Hospital, Wellington, will be pleased to know that he is making satisfactory progress towards recovery.—Dominion. Sir Maui Pomare, who has been at Waitara during the past few days attending a conference in connection with the Native Lands inquiry, has returned to Wellington. He was accompanied by a number of provincial chiefs and chieftains. An old resident of Palmerston North, Mr. Anton Max, died at the age of 82 years. He was born in Poland, and saw service in the Franco-Prussian War. At the conclusion of hostilities he decided io emigrate, and he arrived in New Zealand in 1874. After spending a brief period at Hokitika, Mr. and Mrs. Max took up their permanent residence in Palmerston North. The late Mr. Max leaves five sons and three daughters. Mrs. Max and three children pfedeceased him. The sons are: Joseph (Wellington), August (I’almerston North), Antony (New Plymouth), John (Taumarunui), and the daughters are Mesdames Larsen and Piercy (Dannevirke), and Rumble (Taumarunui). There are also 34 grandchildren and three great-grand children.
