POLICE COURT NEWS

FOWLER AND GRAHAM OASES. MINOR CHARGES WITHDRAWN. The minor charges against the Fowler Bros, and Graham in connection with the recent extensive thefts from various country stores in Taranaki came up for hearing before Mr. R. W. Tate S.M. in the Police Court at New Plymuoth yesterday. The cases had been adjourned by the magistrate some time ago, pending the hearing of major charges against the same men in the Supreme Court. It was explained yesterday that in view of the sentences of the Supreme Court, all the minor charges against the accused would be withdrawn with the exception of those laid under the provisions of the Arms Act. Ambrose Fowler, who had pleaded guilty to being in unlawful possession of a pea rille, was ordered to come up for sentence when called upon.

For having possession of a five chambered revolver without sufficient lawful and proper excuse and also with having possession of the revolver without a permit, Albert Graham was’ordered to come up for sentence when called upon. MISCELLANEOUS CASES. A prohibition order was made against Frank Hurley. Upon a complaint that Daniel Brosnan had failed to supply his wife with adequate maintenance the defendant was ordered to pay 30s per week and costs amounting to £2 2s. It was stated by counsel for the complainant that the defendant persistently refuses to take up work, even though it has been offered to him. Chaike E. Fincham was charged with plying for hire in New. Plymouth without a license. Inspector Day stated that the defendant had been running a service car between Eltham and New Plymouth. He should have paid the license fee, which amounted to 30s, on April, but had been allowed a certain amount of latitude on account of being in unfinancial circumstances. Lately, however, the defendant had adopted a defiant attitude, and the prosecution was accordingly instituted. Inspector Blyde stated in evidence that he had approached defendant on October 23 when he was plying for hire as usual. Defendant had then said that he was not going ; to pay the license fee. A.fine of £1 was imposed with costs 7s with an additional fine of 5s a day for every day that the offence continues

Upon a charge of failing to maintain his wife Francis Augustus Marquct who was arrested at Opunake on Tuesday on a vtirrant issued at Christchurch, was brought before the magistrate. He was remanded to appear at Christchurch next Saturday.
