At the conclusion of the first day's play in an eliminating match for the Hawke Cup competition, the winners of which are entitled to challenge Taranaki (the holders) the scores were: Manawatu, first innings, 117 (Young 12, McSweeney 39, Kells 13). T. Lyon took three wickets for 15. Rangitikei, first innings, 109 (T. Lyon 48, Smith 20, Staples 19). Smilie took four wickets for 19. The scoring was very slow throughout, and play will be continued on Thursday.
