THE KILLING OF TWINS

A FATHER S AWFUL ACT HEARING OF MURDER CHARGE. JURY’S VERDICT OF INSANITY. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Nov. 1. Septimus Page was charged at the Supreme Court this morning with the murder at Otau in March last of his twin son and daughter by cutting their throats. Mr. Meredith, in opening the case for the Crown, said that the whole question for the jury to consider was that of the accused’s mentality. Medical evidence would show that Page was insane at the time of the tragedy, and the jury would have to consider whether they could return a formal verdict of guilty on.that ground. • After hearing the medical evidence Mr. Justice Herdman said he thought there was no doubt Page should be acquitted on the ground of insanity. The jury returned a verdict of not guilty on the grounds of insanity. His Honour ordered accused to be kept in strict custody in Mount Eden gaol until the desire of the Minister of Justice was known.
