INDIAN OFFICER CHARGED.
ALLEGATIONS OF THEFT. By Telegraph.—Press Association Auckland, Sept. 13. In the Police Court, Patrick Shields Hargreaves, ex-captain in the Indian Imperial Army, was charged with stealing a canvas bag and golf clubs, valued at £5, and a typewriter, valued at £l7. The clubs were taken from the rooms of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron and the defence was that it was customary. It was a common custom in India to borrow other people's pro-' perty and that he took the clubs to play with. A lady inadvertently omitted to return them. Accused held the Military Cross for gallantry in the field. Aller leaving the Indian army owing to curtailments he served in the Sudan as District Commissioner. The Magistrate, in dismissing the charge, said he did not believe Hargreaves’ -story, but in view oi his honourable record the charge would’ be dismissed. The second charge was adjourned, accused stating that lie desired to find the man who sold him the typewriter. He knew his name, but not his whereabouts.
