ST. AUBYN STREET RESERVE.
(To the Editor.) Sir, —At the request of the. executive of tile Tourist and Expansion League, I wish to make it plain that the league in no way criticises the Borough Council for its proposal to lease the reserve opposite the railway station. It merely holds a different opinion from that expressed by the council as to the best use to Which the land can be put, and desires to ascertain the views of the ratepayers on the subject in order to assist the council in further, considering its proposed action. Mr. Stainton’s suggestion at the Chamber of Commerce meeting that the council is being blamed in certain quarters cannot apply to the league. There is nothing to blame, as the council is merely doing what it considers the ratepayers would have it do. The league considers that a majority of ratepayers would prefer the land to be retained for the use of themselves and their children and as a beauty spot in the heart of the town. It therefore invites the ratepayers to express their opinions frankly in order to help the council to decide whether to proceed with its plans or to reconsider the matter. There is no question of blame, but merely one of friendly criticism, and a difference in view as to which course of action would be the better for New Plymouth as a whole. The league is most anxious to assist the Borough Council in any way within its power to improve New Plymouth and make it more attractive to visitors and as a place of residence. The league executive desires to leave any suggestion of unfriendly criticism outside this discussion, and to work harmoniously to promote the best interests of the town—l am, etc., G. M. SPENCE, President NJ?. Tourist and Expansion League.
