BILLY BOYS’ WORKSHOP.

MAKING A FOOTSTOOL. You may think that a footstool is too difficult for you to manage, especially such a handsome one as that shown in Figure 1. But it is easy enough, if you follow instructions carefully. First of all get a piece of board about one inch thick, nine inches wide, and twenty-five inches long; cut off two pieces, each measuring five inches long, leaving one piece fifteen, inches long. Cut out the two short pieces at the bottom as shown in Figure 2 to make the feet of the stool, and drill in each piece two holes, about half an inch in diameter, in the positions shown at A and B, Figure 2. Now drill three holes through each end of the long piece of board and screw the “feet” in place ae shown in Figure 3. Obtain from an ironmonger’s two hardwood curtain rods, each fifteen inches long and half an inch in diameter; slide them into

the holes you have drilled in the “feet” (A and B Figure 2) and secure them with glue. The stool has now to be upholstered. This is done by spreading flock on the top board to a thickness of about two inches. If flock is not available, use crumpled pieces of old newspaper. Get a piece of sacking and fasten it to one edge of the board with tin-tacks; turn it over the stuffing, draw it tightly and tack it to the opposite edge, being careful to regulate the stuffing to keep it as smooth and even as possible. See that the edges of the sacking are tucked in and tack it firmly all round the stool. Cover the stool with cretonne, and finish the edges with a strip of gimp or ribbon attached with small brass-headed nails.
