• Mesdames Bill and Cox, the two ladies who were admitted to the New Plymouth Hospital on Sunday as a result of an accident at Okato to a motorcycle and side-car in which they were riding, were reported last night to be progressing satisfactorily towards recovery. The New Plymouth Boys’ High School and Technical College wu! hold a combined military camp o» the racecourse between March 22 and March 26. Through an error in the information received, ;it was. stated yesterday that ■the . barracks would begin on February ■22.

The danger of boys under age driving motor-ears was emphasised by Mr. G. Gibson at the meeting of the Taranaki Automobile Association last night. He said that on the way down from Auckland recently he had met at least twenty ears driven by boys of about eleven or , twelve years of age. A painful accident was sustained by Mr. A. 11. Hodge, manager of the West Coast Refrigerating Company's works at Patea, on Saturday while playing cricket for Patea. against Waverley. He was batting at the time when he vas struck by the ball, sustaining injuries to the ribs which will confine him to his house for a few da-ve.

A young man named Michael Henry Rowe, who was arrested in Currie Street, ,Nfw Plymouth, on Saturday, was charged before Mr. H. R. Cattley, J.P., yesterday morning with being in a state ■of. intoxication while in charge of a motor-cycle. He was remanded to appear before the magistrate to morrow mprning.

Mail bags unguarded in the street was a point raised at a meeting at Seatonn (Wellington). It was said that bags were left-at the terminus unattended. Thio might be taken as a tribute to the honesty, of- the residents, but it was very undesirable. The. attention of the Postal Department is to be called to the matter. Twenty-one applicants for work visited the office of the Department of Labour at New Plymouth last week, the same number as in the week before. Local enterprise was encouraged at the meeting of the Taranaki Automobile Association last night, when the contract for the supply of the association’s badge was' given to a New Plymouth firm, the Cambrian Engineering Company. The centre of the badge, which is a fine piece of work, pictures Mount Egmont in white, surrounded by the Taranaki colours, light amb.r and black.

The garden party for the benefit of tile Girls’ Friendly Society, which was postponed last week, was held yesterday afternoon in the ground® of Miss Percy Smith and Archdeacon F. G. Evans. There was a fair atten lance and £4 was realised. An enjoyable time was spent in golf croquet and in walking round the beautiful gardens, while afternoon tea was provided.

With the idea of framing a uniform policy towards the question of the erection of petrol pumps on the kerbside, it was suggested at last night’s meeting of the Stratford Borough Council that a conference of Taranaki borough councils, the motor trade and automobile associations should be called to discuss the matter, and it was decided to ask the Mayor of New Plymouth (Mr. F. E. Wilson) to take steps in this diixetion.

The census will be taken on the night of Tuesday, April 20. The reason for the alteration from Sunday is that so many people spend the week-end away from home and by Tuesday have returned. There are several new features in the returns, including a call ior returns of the income of persons over 16 years of age. This is being asked for in view of the Government's proposals to provide assistance to householders with large families. By electing Messrs Owen Cardston and J. Davidson-Baxter as life members of the band, the Regimental Band last night paid a tribute to the work these gentlemen performed as producers of the reeently-staged extravaganza "If I Marry Again,’’, in aid of the baud funds. A detailed financial statement of the amount of profit on the production is not yet available owing to several important accounts being outstanding, but it is hoped to make a statement available in the course of a few dave.

Stock is now selling freely in the Wanganui district, the Chronicle says. There is quite a good demand for the 'better class of ewes, while lambs are selling well, although there is a tendency to ease in this direction. Thousands of sheep arc changing hands weekly, and many big private deals are being effected. There is little movement, however, in regard to cattle, the pr incipal business in this direction being done in the spring.

In order to provide "decent recreation’’ for the men on Sundays, Mr. Thos. Gavin, union leader at Arapuni camp, applied to the Matamata County Council ior permission to open the b/'iard room for play on Sunday. The rooms had so far been conducted in an exemplary manner, and he felt confident that suen games would provide recreation for the men, who otherwise had nothing to do and nowhere to go. Members were sympathetic, the chairman, Mr. J. W. Anderson, expressing the view that there was no more harm in playing billiards on Sunday than in indulging in a game of tennis or bowls. The clerk quoted the county by-laws on the matter, which stipulated that billiard rooms had to be closed from 11 o’clock on Saturday night until 8 o’clock on Monday morning. The council, therefore, was unable to grant the permission. The writer added that the police and the camp authorities were in favour of granting the request.

A record day’s deep-sea fishing for New Zealand waters was estxblislied by Mr. Zane Grey and his party cm Friday. Mr. Grey, fishing from the launch Alma G, secured three more sigonlfish, which turned the scales at 2OBlbs, 224!bs and 231 bs respectively. Other catches were as follow:—Mr. Crichton Smith (Sydney), swordfish 2901b5, mako shark 180Ibs, launch Rosemary; W. 8. Lambs (Sydney), swordfish 3051b5, 1 sunch Rosemary; Mr. F. L. Wright (England), swordfish 2“olbs, launch Doris; Mr. Alma Baker, swordfish 2401b5, launcn Reliance. Messrs Pavitt’s launch Roseyth secured a fine swordfish of 2361b5. Nine big game fish were thus caught in one day. For these nine fish the Swordfish Club will give a certificate, but in addition to these fish on the same day Mr. Zane Grey also caught a large brown shark weighing "OOlbs. Captain M tehell also caught a shark weighing 3901b5, and the launch Roseyth caught another one.

The President of the Taranaki Agricultural Society seeks the assistance of members of the Committee and other supporters of the Society at working bees to be held at the Show Grounds, Waiwakaiho, to-day (Tuesday), and also tomorrow, for the purpose of getting the grounds and appurtenances in good order for the forthcoming Jubilee Show. Present indications are for record entries in all divisions of (he show, and it is expected by means of well attended working bees to get everything ready to meet any emergency. Luncheon will be provided by the Society. Work will commence at 10 am. each day. At the Uruti Bazaar on Friday, the 19th inst, there will be some excellent batches of home-made bread and cakes, also unlimited vegetables, etc. Such a boon to town folks, aren’t they?
