The half-holiday in Hawera was brightened to-day by one of the most amusing events of the bands’ carnival—the. fancy-dress hockey match between the Mack Sennett and Mary Pickford teams, 'When the procession was due to leave the post office a large crowd had gathered in the street/ and the procession to the showgrounds was extremely ludicrous. A car load of people in fancy dress was followed by the referee, a tall, scholarly parson wheeling the enormous Fox Film Cup, the trophy in dispute, on a wheelbarrow. The ladies’ jazz band and a hand-cart load of Mack Sennett beauties/drawn by masquerading hockey stars, brought up the rear. The match xvas a humorous one, and the actual issue is still being argued by the teams. On Friday night the; Scottish Society will give another of their popular concerts in the Eltham Town Hall, and a number of other fixtures in various parts of the province have been artanged. The country committee has decided to conduct a shop day in Hawera on Saturday xveek in aid. of the country candidate, Miss Vera Beech. Tonight the sports committee held a very successful fancy-dress aud masquerade dance in the Savoy.
