WANGANUI CHAM PIONSHIP RESULTS, L. QUIN STILL IN. By Telegraph.—Frees Association. Wanganui, 'Last Night. The Wanganui golf tournament was continued to-day hi beautiful weather. The outstanding feature of the play to date has been the success of a young third year player, Reg. McNiven. The championship results are:—First Round. J. Harrison beat ■s. Powdrell 6 up and 5. R. McNiven beat Beaven 4 up and 2. L. Quin beat J. Hussey 2 up and J. J. Goss beat J. Wilson 5 up and 3. F. S. Parkes beat J. Qu in 1 up. C. 'Bidwell beat J. Harold 5 up and 4. Imlay Saunders beat H. Stringer 4 up and 2. L. Seifert beat H. Dale 1 up on the 21st green. Second Round. McNiven beat Harrison 2 up and 1* L. Quin beat Goss 1 up. Parkes beat Bidwell 6 up and 5. The Wanganui golf tourney was continued to-day .in perfect weather. The links were in fine order and the greens much keener than yesterday. The outstanding feature of the morning’s play was a great round of 75, including a magnificent 3. It was accomplished by J. C. Bidwell. His card read: Out, 4,4, 4, <5, 2,4, 5,5, 5,-38. In: 5,5, 3,5, 3,3, 5,4, 4—37. Harrison proved much too good for Powdrell, winning easily by 0 up and 5 to play. R. McNiven fulfilled the promise his qualifying round showed by defeating Bevan 4 up and. 2, returning the fine score of 74 for 17 holes. In the Goss-Wilson match the latter won the - first hole, but Goss then won the next three. Wilson won the sth, but was 5 down at the turn. Goss had gone out in 37. Wilson held his own coining home, but could not reduce his opponent’s lead.

F. S. Parkes and J. Quin had a dingdong go, the latter winning at the last hole. It was a very even go all the way, there never being more than one hole difference between them.

L. Seifert and H. P. Dale had a great battle. The former was dormy one, but the Eltham man squared the game by sensationally holing a fifty-yard mashie for a three at the last hole. The game continued to the 21st green before Seifert won L. Quin was 4 up on Hussey at the 7th, but the Wanganui man had. squared the game at the 12th. Quin eventually won 2 up and 1. Bidwell’s great 75 proved too much for Harold, who went under 5 and 4. I Stringer was not seen to advantage against Saunders, who won 4 and 2, I The afternoon's play was ILII of surprises. The first to start were Harrison and McNiven. Harrison took the second hole, but McNiven took the 4th and 6th and was 1 up at the turn. He lost the 10th, but won the 11th. 12th, 13th and 14th, making himself dormy. Harrison won the next two, but could only halve the 17th, leaving McNiven the winner by 2 up and 1. Goss and L. Quin had a battle royal. Quin played great golf for a start, being one under fours at the sth, where he was 2 up. Goss had reduced this to 1 at the turn. Coining in Quin won the 12th and Goss the 15th. The last three holes were halved in fours, leaving Quin 1 up. Quin’s card showed 70 and Goss 80. Parkes played brilliantly against Bidwell and defeated the Wairarapa man 6 up and 5. He was even fours up to the finish of the match. His card read: Out, 5,4, 4,5, 2,4, 5,4, 4—37, and in (to the 13th hole), 2,5, 4, 4 —45. Seifert played splendidly coming In and defeated Saunders 4 and 2. L. Quin plays McNiven and L. Seifert plays Parkes in the semi-finals to-mor-row. There is great interest in the first game, which is sure to be followed by a big gallery. The serai-finalists of the Belmont match include three Taranaki men in Ha sell, O’Callaghan, and Casey. Ha sell was playing well to-day, defeating two aoliff opponents in Bernau and Dr. Earle. He meets O’Callaghan in the semi-final to-morrow morning. Falling was second in the medal handicap this afternoon, returning the good card of 84—10—74. LADIES’ TOURNAMENT. MANAW AT U CH AMPIONSHIP. By TeDgraph.—Tress Association. Palmerston North, Oct. 7. There were several surprises in the first round of the championship in the Manawatu ladies’ golf tournament. Miss Olive Kay, who won the Auckland provincial tournament, was beaten by Mrs. Broderick (Wanganui). Mrs. Siianders, winner of the Hawke’s Bay tournament, was defeated by Miss Moore (Palmerston North). The results were:—• , Mrs. Broderick beat Miss Kay bv 7 and 6. Miss F. S. The junior championship of the Hawsra Golf Club was completed last week, when in the final P. H. Vinnicombe beat A. Blair 8 up and. 5. In the final 36 holes were played. At the 18th Vinnieumbe was 4 up and Blair was unable ' • make any impression upon him.
