News has been received of the death in England bf Mrs. Amy Nathan, widow of the late Mr. Walter Nathan, of Wellington. The deceased lady was a sister of Mrs, F. J. Nathan, of Palmerston North, ■ Dr. W.j J. Molllwraith, inspector of schools at Auckland, has been appointed inspectbr of schools in the Hawke’s Bay district. He will take up'his new duties towards the end of this month. Mr. James Craig, who paased away at Gisborne, aged 84 years, came to New Zealand from Antrim, Ireland, in 1841. He served in the militia during the time of the Te Kooti rebellion. A vote of sympathy with the relatives of "the late Mri G?li. lierbert was passed at a meeting of the general committee of the Taranaki 'Agricultural Society yesterday. Mr. Herbert was for some time a member of the committee. Mr, J. W. H. Martin, of Pukearuhe, underwent a painful operation in a Wellington private hospital on Thursday, Private advice was received in New Plymouth-, yesterday that he was doing well. Captain Henry Cooper, a veterinary surgeon formerly very well known in the Manawatu district and who has lately returned from an extended tour ■in Europe and the Old Country, has taken up his residence in New Plymouth.

A very old Maori chieftainess, Raiha Kaha, passed away at the Rukuinoana Pa, Morrinsville, recently. The deceased, who was well known ia the district, was 85 years old. She had not lived long in Morrinsville, having moved from Matangi only a short time ago. Before that she had been living at Maunga-. kawa, near Cambridge.

The death of Mr. James Olds occurred at Christchurch on Wednesday, aged 71 years. He came from Cornwall to New Zealand in 1882, landing at Port Chalmers. He went to Oamaru, entered the service of the Government as plate-layer and continued in Government service for thirty-nine years before retirement on'superannuation. Mr!. Olds was best known in connection with church work, having been associated with .the Methodist Church since his youth and for forty years he wae a local preacher. He leaves a widow, five sons and seven daughters. The sons include: Rev. C. H. Olds (Auckland) and Rev. E. T. Olds (Wellington). One of the daughters is Mrs. Bensley, who is engaged in mission work in the Solomon Islands.

A Wellington message reports the death of Mr. A. E. Whyte, secretary of the Wellington Racing Club, aged 54. He underwent an operation for appendicitis a fortnight ago, but collapsed suddenly and died in ten minute®. He was Originally a bank clerk and became secretary of the racing club 23 years ago and was largely responsible for the construction of the present course at Trentham. At a special meeting of the committee of the racing club a resolution was passed expressing deep regret at the death of Mr. A. E. Whyte and appreciation of his great and able services, and conveying sincere sympathy to Mrs. Whyte and family. They further decided to’ abandon the club’s annual ball. Lord Cave defeated Lord Oxford (formerly ■ Mr. H. H. Asquith) l in the election for Chancellor of Oxford University (states a London cable). The resignation of Cr. F. W. Matthews, representing the Waihi riding on the Cfifton County Cqunc.V, was received at the monthly meeting of the council at Waitara yesterday. In making this announcement, Cr. Matthews, said he would shortly discontinue to be a ratepayer in the county, and he would therefore not be able to hold office on the council. He desired to take the opportunity of thanking all the other members of the council for the assistance and courtesy they had given during his term of office and also the clerk (Mr. H. E. Vaughan), the engineer (Mr, C. F. Dowsett) anil the Press. The council received the resignation with regret, the chairman' (Mr. R. H. Pigott) and Cr. Foreman making special mention of the energetic manner in which Cr. Matthews had assisted in conducting the work of the council.
