The police are looking, lor a practically new five-seater Ford motor car wjiieh, was stolen during Thursday niglilt. from Mr. I. Preston’s garage on the Kent Road, The car wae put in the garage at 9.30 p.m. and was missing when the garage was opened at 6.30 yesterday morning. The car is painted grey, has a brown hood and has a spare wheel attached to the back. The number plates are N.Z. 57-304 and the engine number is C 423,468. One of the back stays is broken and is held together by wire. All police stations throughout the district have been advised of. the theft. That delight of the small boy’s heart, a tea party, made St. Mary’s Peace Memorial Hall. a. .scene of juvenile gaiety .yesterday afternoon and evening. The tea party was a recompense for the loss of the annual Sunday school pienie, which had to he abandoned owig to the infantile paralysis epidemic. The party was organised by the teachers of the morning and afternoon Sunday schools, the younger children attending from 4.30 to 7 and the older ones from 7 to 9.30. Organised games were played ami tea was provided for all the children.
One of the most common excuses of absconding seamen was advanced by /ohn William McDonald, when he was ordered by Mr. A. M. Mowlem, 8.M., yesterday, to be placed on board the schooner. Holinwood, from which he deserted “on Thursday. McDonald alleged that the vessel was unseaworthy and that she had practically no gear worth the name if it came to a matter of life saving. As he left the dock he remarked that lie would sooner go to gaol than on board the Holinwood again. McDonald was advised to make his complaint against the schooner to the collector of customs. The master of the Holmwood (lOaptain Stanich) and Messrs. Holm and Co., the owners, stated yesterday that the schooner had been given the usual survey before leaving Newcastle for New Plymouth and that the vessel was sailing under Government certificate. Jack Harrigan, who deserted from the Mamari on April 27, and was arrested at Motiirqa on Thursday, pleaded guilty and was convicted and ordered to' pay costs amounting to £2 7s, in default 10 days’ imprisonment.
