PUKEARUHE V. OKOKE. Football is being taken on with avidity in this district just at present (writes our Urenui correspondent). Independently of the Urenui team, which is competing so successfully in the junior grade competition, a triangular contest is being held by Pukearuhe, Wai-toi-toi and Okoke. The first contest took place at Pukearuhe between that club and Okoke, and, after a gruelling contest, resulted in a win for the latter by 3 points to nil. Mr. A. Davis, an old resident of Pukearuhe, controlled the game, and discharged a most difficult task successfully and impartially, considering that the players were wearing a variety of colours, making it a hard matter to distinguish one team from another. Pukearuhe is always noted for its hospitality, and treated their opponents to a most sumptuous repast, which, it is needless to say, was heartily appreciated. In the evening a most successful euchre party and dance was held, Miss Edwin presiding at the piano, the visitors and others enjoying themselves most thoroughly. The next match to take place was between Wai-toi-toi and Okoke on the ground of the latter, and there was a large attendance of visitors from Urenui and other quarters, including a strong proportion of ladies, who evinced keen interest in the game. The weather was perfect, and, under the control of Mr. J. Fitzgerald, four fif-teen-minute spells were played. From the kick-off to the final whistle the game was most willing, and although the home team won by 11 points to nil, and had considerably the best of the game, Wai-toi-toi put up a good fight, and nearly scored on one or two occasions. With a little more practice and combination they should make a much closer finish when the return match takes place at Wai-toi-toi. After the game, the team and all visitors were entertained at a splendid hot tea 'laid out at the residence of Mr. L. Frazer, and the Okoke ladies are to be complimented upon the manner in which the repast was served, and the hospitable way in which they entertained their guests. In the evening a euchre party and was held, and Mr. J. Thompson, representing Wai-toi-toi, took the opportunity of thanking the ladies for their consideration. Miss Edwin (who is almost indispensable at these functions) provided the music, and Mr. Holly made a capital M.C. The two first prizes, a cup and saucer for the ladies and a pair of slippers for the gentlemen, were won by Mr. and Mrs. Stan. Hewlett. It is understood that Wai-toi-toi are making every effort to win the return game, and also treat their opponents in a fitting manner. ASSOCIATION GAME. MANAIA DEFEAT AURO A. The meeting of Manaia and Auroa, at Manaia, on Saturday aroused keen interest amongst “Soccer” followers, the result being a win for Manaia by four goals to nil. The game was fast and interesting .throughout, but Manaia were easily the better team on the day’s play. For Manaia goals were shot by Betteridge, B. Pollard (2), and Muggeridge.
