ACCIDENT ON RAILWAY.
ENGINE FIREMAN INJURED. While engaged in shunting operations at the New Plymouth station about 7.30 last night a fireman named William K. Reid became caught between his engine, which was moving, and a stationary truck, and sustained injuries which necessitated his immediate removal to the hospital in the ambulance. He was reported late last night to be comfortable and progressing satisfactorily. It was stated that Reid was standing on the side of the engine trimming the coal in the tender, with his back towards the direction in which the engine was moving. A rake of trucks was standing on the neighbouring line, the end truck being close to the point where the two tracks met. With no projection on the side the engine would have cleared this truck with a little to spare, but Reid was caught as in a wedge, and was turned almost completely round when his back struck the truck.
