HAWERA NEWS.

PARK BOWLING CLUB. - ANNUAL MEETING. (From Our Own Reporter.) Hawera, June 18. The fourth annual meeting of the Park Bowling Club was held last night, the president (Mr. C. R. Stannard) presiding over a good attendance of members. The annual report stated, inter alia, that the membership was still a<bout 80, but there was a prospect of increasing this number. The club had incurred a great liability by laying down the green and erecting the pavilion. The pavilion now being the property of the Borough Council, was therefore not a realisable asset. This fact was not geneially known, and it was pointed out that the club had materially'improved a portion of the park at its own expense and handed it over to the burgesses of Hawera. The financial position was -better by about £6O than last year, but members should pay their subscriptions promptly to keep interest on overdraft down. The green had been top-dressed and was looking remarkably well. In moving the adoption of the report and. balance-sheet, Mr. Stannard said the club’s position was not yet as good as he would like to see it. The trouble was the same as with all young clubs—the lack of membership. If they could increase the membership by 30 or 40 they would be “on a good wicket.” Mr. J. G. Osborne suggested that, seeing the pavilion was borough property, the council should be asked to pay the fire insurance premiums.

Mr. Wainwright said he thought the Borough Council should shoulder some of the cost of the pavilion, seeing that it was erected on the public park and belonged to the borough. Mr. Stannard explained that there was an arrangement between the club and the council whereby the club would have the use of the pavilion for all time. He did not think it would be fair to ask the council to take any responsibility for the pavilion, excepting that Mr. Osborne's suggestion tvas worthy of consideration.

The report and balance-sheet were then adopted. The delegates to the centre were instructed by resolution to oppose the Manawatu Centre’s suggestion that the small local tournaments should be abandoned in favour of big West Coast tournaments to 'be held at the various large towns, such as Palmerston North, Wanganui and New Plymouth, alternately. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year: President. Mr. W. Grant; vice-presidents, Messrs. F. Quin, A. Murdoch; treasurer, Mr. J.. M. Westaway; secretary, Mr. A. Grant; committee, Messrs. C. Curtis, S. Parkes, E. McPhillips (guarantors), E. Thurston, and J. Goodwin: auditor, Mr. R. St. George; delegates to the Taranaki Centre, Messrs. F. Quin and A. Murdoch. A resolution, moved by Mr. J. G. Osborne, recommending the committee to approach the Borough Council asking it to pay the insurance premiums on the pavilion, seeing that the building was on a public park and was practically the property of the council, was carried unanimously. The delegates to the centre were instructed to strongly oppose the continuance of the banner matches. Appreciation of the services of the retiring secretary, Mr. A. Black' since the inception of the club was placed on record. Mr. Black was made an honorary life member of the club, and the committee was recommended to show members’ appreciation in a tangible manner. The committee was recommended that teams should be selected not later than 5 p.m. on the evening prior to a match from names on the board, and that the names of teams selected be placed on the board that evening. Votes of thanks were accorded the older members who had assisted beginners, the retiring committee and president, the Borough Council for the use of the chambers, and the Press. R.S.A. RE-UNION BALL. The Hawera returned soldiers’ reunion ball, always a popular function, fully maintained its reputation at last night’s function. About 130 couples thoroughly enjoyed the dancing to the excellent music of McDonald’s orchestra, and the supper, under the management of the Women’s National Reserve, was a special feature and was assisted by a donation Irom the Hawera Dairy Company. The ballroom, reception lounge and supper room were very effectively decorated and lighted by the returned soldiers’ committee, and the M.C.’s (Messrs. D. Burgess, E. Hard ley, R. Holland, M. R. Jones, H. Briggs and S. Maslin) left nothing to be desired in their attention to the dancers. Following their night’s performance, the Australian Ladies’ Pipe Band were the guests of the returned soldiers at the dance.
