AMERICAN CONGRESSMEN.
VISIT TO HONOLULU. NOT COMING TO NEW ZEALAND. By Telegra.pii.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received June 17, 5.5 p.m. Honolulu, June 17. The naval transport Chaumont arrived to-day with twelve Congressmen and their families and two million dollars of gold bullion. They were met by an armed guard of a thousand sailors, while local ladies adorned the Congressional party with flower garlands after the traditional Hawaiian fashion. The gold was carefully removed to two battleships. Upon the arrival of the fleet for Australia the bullion will be deposited in local banks and drawn against in sterling to pay the men and purchase supplies. The Congressmen will inspect the fleet and Pearl Harbour. It had been hoped that they might continue with the fleet to Australia, but the impending session of Congress, which it is believed will consider the question of extending and strengthening the harbour defences, makes their presence necessary m Washington long before the fleet returns from Australia and New Zealand. The Congressmen will, however, proceed this week to Manila, returning thence to the United States.
