STRIFE-TORN CHINA.
GUARDS FOR FOREIGNERS. POLICE AND TROOPS USED. EFFORT TO RESUME WORK. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—-Copyright. Received June 17. 7.45 p.m. Pekin. June 16. The Government has issued orders for the special protection of all foreign employees and foreign travellers on the railways. It also instructs the railway and police chiefs to provide efficient police for this purpose. In a previous order the Ministry instructed foreign employees to remain at their posts and carry on their usual work. As the result of representations by foreign authorities Chinese troops are patrolling the city. Special guards have been placed outside the offices and residences of officials of the principal foreign firms. Chang-Tso-Lin has despatched rein • forcements to the troops at Peking. Hankow reports that of seven Bolshevik agitators arrested by the Chinese authorities, one was shot by them. Foochow’ reports that the students are urging foreign-employed Chinese to strike, and are appealing to the merchants’ guild to support the strikers. The military governor posted guards at the foreign quarter, where all is quiet. MOVEMENTS OF BRITISH WARSHIPS Received June 17, 7.16 p.m. London, June 17. It was announced in the House of Commons that the Foreign Office was making representations to the Admiralty regarding our warships in Chinese waters, consisting of six cruisers, four sloops, twelve submarines and a number of river craft. The latest Admiralty movements indicate that the Australian cruiser Brisbane is at Wei Ha Wei. MERCENARIES DISARMED. Received June 18, 12.35 a.m, Peking, June 17. Canton messages state that practically all the mercenaries are now disarmed and many have enrolled in the Government army. They will be used as a labour corps. The railway men resumed work on Monday.
