The by-election in the Franklin electorate to-day to fill the vacancy caused by the death of the late Prime Minister (the Right Hon. W. F. Mansey) resulted in Mr. E. D. McLellan (the Reform candidate) retaining the seat for the eminent by defeating the Labour nominee (Mr. J. S. Montgomerie) by 5865 totes to 2159. Following are the details of the voting:— Me- Mont-

MR. MASSEY’S MEMORY HONOURED DEAF EAR TO SOCIALISM; Auckland, Last Night. “It Is hardly necessary for me to sajr that the signal victory of the Government candidate .in the Franklin byelection contest will give the greatest ’ satisfaction to a very larg£ majority of the people of New Zealand,” said, th* Prime Minister (the Hom J. G. Coatefl) .to-night. “It constitutes a remarkable tribut* to the memory of an illustrious statesman, who represented the constituency in Parliament through almost the whole period of his political career, and whose loss Franklin, in common with the rest of the Dominion, honours to-day,” added Mr. Coates. “Moreover, the result shows in no uncertain manner that the electors have turned a deaf ear to the fanciful and Socialistic doctrines which were placed before them. Mr. McLellan’s victory will be haileel with pleaaure by all of our follow citizens who have the cause of sound and stable government at heart.”

At the lost general election, in 19% the late Mr. Massey 'beat hia Liberal opponent, Mr. J. Rea, by over two to one, polling 5276 votes against Mr» Rea’s 2526 votes.
