The city council discussed the prevalence of infantile paralysis in and about Melbourne. It was urged, in view of New Zealand's experience,, that they should prepare for an emergency. Dr. Hughes stated that the average number o'f cases in the children’s hospital previously did not exceed three, but this year there had been twentytwo, with five deaths. There were at least two other deaths outside, and. one doctor was caring for eleven case*. The council decided to form a stapd by organisation in the event of it being needed. A conference of health officers is being held to discuss the position.

DEATH OF NEW PLYMOUTH YOUNG GIRL VICTIM. A fatal ea.se of infantile paralysis occurred at the New Plymouth Hospital • yesterday morning, the victim being the 19-year-old girl who was admitted as a suspect at mid-day on Monday. The girl had been unwell since Friday, and at the .time of her removal to the hospital the trouble could not be definitely pronounced to be paralysis. That night, however, the tymptoms became fairly general and the patient died early yesterday morning. All the restrictions which were made t during the epidemic have been applied to the household from which the patient was taken, and all the inmates will ■be isolated for the prescribed period.
