NEW PLYMOUTH—TE KUITI

' CLAIM FDR ASSISTANCE. Special assistance with the maintenance of the Te Kuiti-New Plymouth Road from Te Kuiti to Mahoenui is to be sought from the Highways Board by the Waitomo County Council. It is felt that settlers in the thinly-populated districts responsible cannot provide the expenditure necessary to keep the road up to the standard required 'by the board. It is desired to lay a permanent surface, as the ordinary surface, even where recently laid, is quickly breaking up under the heavy motor traffic, but an estimate of cost proved to be teyond the council’s resources. The question has become a burning one, and resolutions received by the council from meetings of ratepayers in every riding of the county confirmed the council’s opinion that an increase in rates was impracticable.. During a lengthy discussion, Mr. C. K. Wilson said that as the Government had;spent so much money on the other end of the road, the Highways Board should, give some assistance to the county to get its end in order. Mr. R. Buddy, said that when the Gov.ernment removed the Clifton County toll gate it took over the responsibility Joy 12 miles of what was a Clifton County road. Waitomo had got no revenue from the public, as Clifton had, through the toll gate. A motion asking for special consideration was carried unanimously.
