WESTOWN HALL.

FIRST ANNUAL MEETING,

SUCCESS OF ENTERTAINMENT. The first annual meeting of the Westown Hall Society was held last night, Mr. J. Garcia presiding over a representative attendance. After detailing the steps leading to the incorporation of the society, the annual report stated: —“The question of financing the erection of the new hall caused considerable concern, (but was eventually overcome by the decision to issue debentures. The matter was put in hand and as soon as the society was incorporated debentures to the amount of £BOO bearing interest at 6 per cent, for a term of five years, were issued and freely taken up. The contract for the hall amounted to £825, and was let on December 1, 1923. Messrs. H. Wallath and R. Lovell, who had prepared the plans and specifications gratuitously, generously agreed to act as supervisors on behalf of the committee, which is much indebted to them for their painstaking care and constant supervision, neither sparing themselves in the society’s interest. The hall was not completed until a considerable time after the due date, some of the delay being due to the fact that a portion of the structure had been -blown down during the erection. Additional expense was incurred in finishing off the building, as well as installing electric light and seating, erecting gallery, picture box, etc., installing heater, and equipping the kitchen. This, of course, added considerably to the cost, but thanks to the generous patronage accorded the various functions held in the hall since the opening entertainment the sum of £l2O was raised. Tn addition £lO5 has accrued in rental. Practically the only liability on the hall is the £BOO debentures, though, of course, some expense will be necessary to complete the hall, which requires lining. In this connection the committee have already decided to proceed with the lining of the hall window high, prior to the coming winter.” The balance-sheet disclosed that on the liabilities side, debentures issued amounted to £BBO, sundry creditors £3O, accumulated funds £682 19s lOd. Assets were as follow: Hall building and section £l4OO, fittings, etc., £lOO, cash in bank £9 7s 7d, cash in hand £S 12s 3d.

The annual report of the entertainment committee stated that the committee had worked consistently, fifteen meetings being held. The first weekend dance was a great success, and was the forerunner of 24 entertainments. Every entertainment was conducted at a profit. The euchre parties did not vield the profit anticipated, and these were discontinued. The gross takings amounted to £212 0s Id, while the expenses amounted to £llB 5s 6d, leaving a nett profit of £93 14s 7d. In moving the adoption of the annual report and balance-sheet, the chairman congratulated the district on the very satisfactory position shown in regard to the. financial position of the society and the work which had been done. The residents of Upper Westown now had a fiall which they could well be proud of, but'' they would «till have to be prepared to meet certain expenses. He was sure, however, that these would be met without any difficulty. Mr. A. R. Standish congratulated the officers of the committee and the whole district on the excellent results obtained*

The report and balance-sheet were adopted without discussion. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year: President, Mr. R. Wright; vice-president, Mr. H. Marfell; hen. secretary and treasurer, Mr. V. C. Davies (pro tein); committee, Messrs. L. Gredig, J. Birmingham, N. Sole, J. Knapnian, N. Knofflock, 11. Wallath, O. Knofflock; auditors, Messrs.
