WATERSIDE TROUBLE,
UNION RAISES NEW POINT. REFUSAL TO MEET EMPLOYERS. DISPUTES COMMITTEE INCIDENT. By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. At Lyttelton this morning the watersiders refused to work the Dutch steamer Ombiin unless paid for six hours standing by, time yesterday, when the weather was wet. The employers will only agree to pay for two hours* work, so the vessel is idle.
A meeting of the local disputes committee was called for this afternoon, but the men’s representatives declined to sit on the committee, and no meeting could be held. Mr. J. Flood, the watersiders’ secretary, subsequently said that as the employers had refused to meet on the National Disputes Committee at Wellington to deal with several matters in dispute, it had been decided that the men’s representatives would not act on local committees until such time as the National Disputes Committee met.
