OIL IN PERSIA.
GOVERNMENT RETAINS SHARES. By Telegraph.—Pre.’j Assn.—Copyright. London, Nov. 19. It is stated that- the Government has informed the Anglo-Persian Oil Company that it does not intend to dispose of the share it holds in the company. A message from London, dated November 9, stated: There has been considerable activity in Anglo-Persian Oil Company’s shares since the election, the price having risen from 53s 9d to 62s 6d. The rise is due to an expectation that the Shell Group will again endeavour to purchase the Government’s shares. A proposition with this end in view was under Cabinet consideration when Mr. Baldwin resigned last year, but it was rejected by the Labour Governm»ent in February. There is considerable doubt whether the Conservative Government will sell, as it would thereby render the Navy dependent on foreign-controlled oil.
