WEST END SCHOOL.

MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The monthly meeting of the West End School Committee was held on Thursday evening, when tlieve were present: Messrs. J. Garcia (chairman), J. Hawker, J. Lobb, T. R. Julian, C. 6. Berg, M. 'G. Nasmith, G. Mdsaacs, H. J. AJbram (hon. secretary), and the headmaster, Mr. J. W. Thomas. An apology was received from. Mr. Jones. The headmaster reported that the roll number was now 549, eighteen children being admitted and six withdrawn during the last four weeks. The average attendance had greatly improved, most of the children having recovered from the measles. The average for the last four weeks was 481, 47*6, 511 and 515 respectively. The staff were all back to duty again, the examinations having finished. Mr. Hawkes resumed duty on November 3. The trainees were to be congratulated on their successes at the teachers’ examinations held in August. Mr. Douglas Jillett completed his D examination and also obtained a full pass for the C certificate. Mr. Clifford Hawkes completed his D and passed in two subjects for C. Mr. Julian completed his D and passed in three subjects for C. Miss C. Valentine completed her D and passed in three subjects for C and Miss Heckler obtained partial pass for D. Miss J. HurleJMti to pass in music to complete her Craig was also successful in his C certificate. The concert was held on October 22 and 23, and was very successful. He wished to thank the assist; ant and junior teachers as well as the parents for the great help given and the committee for its assistance towards the success. The proficiency examination will be held on December 1, and the school would close up for the 'Christmas holidays on Friday, ’December 19. He acknowledged with thanks a donation of £1 Is from a 'friend who wished to remain anonymous, towards the school cricket funds, a bat being purchased therewith. Mr. F. *C. Ferry had also donated a medal for the boy obtaining the best batting average. The report was adopted, and it was ufn'animously resolved to (congratull'ate the teachers on the success achieved at the examinations, appreciative reference being made to the work of the headmaster in supervising their studies. The secretary reported that the concert had shown a profit o-f £69 15s 6d. This it was stated was a record for any similar entertainment held by the school.

Members expressed their appreciation of the excellence of the entertainment submitted and the splendid financial results achieved, and it was resolved to accord the teachers, children and parents a hearty vote of thanks. Votes of thanks were also accorded the Boys' High School orchestra, the Technical College, Messrs. Collier and Co., and Cook and Lister, and all who' had assisted towards the success of the function. Messrs. T. R. Julian and J. Lobb, the visiting committee, reported on various minor matters that required attention, notably regarding the sasn cords, etc. Owing to the lack of ventilation in the infants’ room, it had been found necessary to instal a ventilator. The report was adopted and various matters will be referred to the Education Board. Messrs. J. Lobb and G. Molsaacs were appointed a visiting committee for the ensuing month. The Education Board notified that the question of providing seats outside the ' school had been referred to a sub-com-mittee to report and that various other matters had been referred to the board’s architect. It was decided to hold the prize-giving ceremony in the Empire Theatre on the afternoon of IVednesday, December 17, the infants’ prizes to be presented at the school during the forenoon.
