EGMONT SHOW

(CROWD ON PEOPLE'S DAY. GREAT PARADE OF STOCK. AN IMPRESSIVE DISPLAY, BALANCE OF THE AWARDS. The People’s Day at the Egmont A. and P. Show at Hawera took place yesterday. The morning was dull and threatening, but fortunately the weather brightened as the morning advanced, and the people from the surrounding countryaide thronged into Hawera early. Soon after mid-day their numbers were swelled by the townspeople, the town making half-holiday for the occasion, until by the time fixed for the grand parade, was a big crowd round the show The takings, of course, will not equal those of last year, which -constituted a record, but had the weather been fine throughout, it is safe to assume that another record would have been established. The president (Mr. E. A. Washer) and his band of enthusiasts can, however, look forward to the future confidently, as the entries received show that they have the support of the farmeis, and the attendance under none too favourable conditions gives evidence that the public is also with them. The grand parade was a magnificent spectacle. As each section, headed -by ite champions, passed in full review, even the most casual observer could not fail to be impressed with the importance of the show, as indicative of the value of dairying in Taranaki. A striking feature was the parade of horses in all sections. The adjudication of the remaining classes proceeded apace during the morning, all being complete by the time fixed for the parade, and the afternoon devoted to competitions which were contested by large fields, and acme fine jumping was witnessed.

The side-shows, of which there were a considerable number, appeared to do satisfactory business, while the trade displays were also well patronised. The recently resuscitated Hawera Citizens’ Band, under Sergeant-Major C. S. Mahoney, was present and rendered an enjoyable programme of music. As on the first day the secretary (Mr. M. C. Crichton) and his assistant (Mr. R. McCay) had everything right up to the moment, the smooth running of the show contributing largely to the enjoyment.
