PROTECTION OF GAME.
BREACHES OF THE LAW. The necessity for strict compliance with the regulations under the Game Pjotection Act with regard to imported game, was stressed in the Magistrate’s Court at New Plymouth yesterday, when tin- Taranaki Acelimati*ation Society prosecuted O. W. Sole on charges of having exposed for sale or having in his possession some pheasants, and also with having placed the birds in a freezing chamber without giving proper notice to the society. Mr. A. A. Bennett, who appeared for the society, said that, the charge* were brought as a warning, a* a strict enforcement of the regulations was one of the few ways at the disposal of the society to protect game. Mr. R. H. QuiUiam, for the defendant, said that the pheasants had not been offered for sale, and on giving an undertaking that in future no pheasants would be displayed in the defendant’s shop except with a notice that they were for exhibition only, 4his charg* was withdrawn. On the second charge, to which a plea of guilty was entered, a fine of £l, with costs £1 Bs, was imposed. Two charges, one of having failed to keep a register of imported game placed in his freezing chamber ajid th* other of having failed to notify the society that he was placing the game in the chamber, were also preferred against JW. Kurta. The defendant pleaded and it was stated that he had merely aoceptexl the care of the birds on behalf of the previous defendant. A fine of LI, with costs £1 15s, was imposed with respect to both charges.
