METHODIST SYNOD.

SESSION IN STRATFORD. CONCLUDING STAGES. (From Our Own Reporter.) Stratford, Nov. 20The meeting of the Taranaki-Wanganui District Methodist Synod was continued this morning. An ambitious scheme for the erection of a new Theological College in Auckland was considered and adopted. The complete scheme of buildings provides for a college, chapel, principal's residence, tutor’s | residence, accommodation for fifty men, three class rooms, a library, committee room and accommodation for the domestic staff.

A splendid offer which appealed strongly to the members of the Synod was made by Rev. W. T. Hooper, of Gonville, who offered himself to the Church as an evangelist to do work in the backblocks of th e Dominion. Th e offer was unique in that it was made without asking the church to assume any responsibility financially, and was heartily recommended to the conference for acceotance.

A deputation representing the New Zealand Alliance waited upon the Synod pointing out the growing interest in the prohibition movement. The deputation referred to the results of the elections in America, an increased number of “dry” candidates being returned to both the House and the Senate,

Resolutions were passed strongly protesting against the proposals contained in the recent Parliamentary committee’s report, also opposing most strenuously the attempt being made to secure approval of the scheme known as corporate control, and demanding a ballot paper with only two issues.

The Synod assured the deputation of its whole-hearted support in great social reform.

Deep regret was expressed that the Government should have flouted the Christian conscience of the country by granting increased facilities for gambling through the recent Gaming Bill. The Synod urged the members of the church to consider seriously the question of putting principles before party at - the election polls.

The Synod expressed its appreciation of the services of the Press and of the hospitality extended by the citizens of Stratford
