HAIR SPECIALIST’S PREMIUM.
APPEAL ALLOWED. By Telegraph—Press Association. Palmerston North, Sept. 25. Reserved judgment was delivered by Mr. Justice Reed in an appeal case in which Jane Burnett Currie, hair specialist, Palmerston North, appealed against the decision of Mr. Stout, 0.M., fining her for taking a premium from Miss Martin to learn the trade. The Magistrate held that Martin was an apprentice, and therefore within the definition of the Shops and Offices Act, and that Currie had no right to accept a premium. Mr. Justice Reed (held that Martin was neither an apprentice nor an employee, because she received no pay and was not bound to any hours to work in the shop, although she had done some work there. Currie, therefore, was justified in accepting a premium, and the appeal was allowed, without costs to the respondent, the inspector of factories.
