LOCAL AND GENERAL.

“The number of motor-cars using the streets for parking places is increasing every day, and it is imperative that something be done to indicate the parking places even more plainly than is done now,” reported the borough in* spector (Mr. R. Day) to the New Plymouth Borough Council last night- The Mayor (Mr. F. E. Wilson) remarked that the council would take action. A request for information concerning the names of the mover and seconder and those who voted for and against the motion refusing the New Plymouth branch of the Labour Party permission to take up collections at their open-air meetings was received by the Borough Council last night from the secretary of the branch. On the motion of the Mayor (Mr. F. E. Wilson) it was decided to inform the branch that the council’s decision was unanimous.

A visit to the New Plymouth public hospital was made by the GovernorGeneral (Lord Jellicbe) and Lady Jellico© on Wednesday. ‘ I have come hero to say good-bye to the people who could not come to farewell me,” said Lord Jellieoe when he and I-ady Jellicoe were met at the hospital by the chairman of the board (Mr. M. Fraser), the medical superintendent (Dr. E. A. Walker) and the matron (Miss Campbell). The vice-regal party visited each ward and had a cheery greeting for every patient, while they also# ehatted with the nurses in the various wards. The beautiful view of the town from the hospital was much admired by Their Excellencies.

The New Plymouth Borough Council decided last night to forward to Mr. ■S. G. Smith. M.P., the following recommendations from the North Taranaki Automobile Association with regard to the Motor Vehicles Bill: (a) That all motor lorries be required to have reflectors so affixed as to enable the drivers to see vehicles approaching from the rear; and (b) that provision ‘be made to prevent overloading of motor lorries or loading in such a way that the load overhangs the side of the lorry. The. council decided to take no action in regard to the request df the association that notices be erected in Courtenay Street on each side of its intersection with Liardet Street warning motorists to keep a look-out for trams.

Another inquiry concerning Taranaki ironsand was received by the New Plymouth Harbour Board yesterday, when Messrs. Jensen and Nicholson, Ltd., varnish and japan manufacturers, of London, asked the board for as much information as possible concerning the constituents of the sand. They would also be glad of a fairly large sample of the sand, together with some indication as to its locality and whether it would be possible to have shipments made to England in largo quantities and at what rates. Members of the board were unanimous that it was desirable to give inquirers all the information possible, and the matter was left in the hands of the chairman (Mr. C. E. Bellringer) and Mr. Newton King.
