OIL ABLAZE.
FLAMES SPREAD RAPIDLY FOUR LIVES LOST. HOMES DESTROYED. . By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Sept. 16, 7.55 p.m. New York, Sept- 15. At Monterey lightning struck a tank last night containing fifty-five thousand barrels of crude oil and started a conflagration which is likely to cost three million dollars. Four soldiers who participated in fighting the flames lost their lives. Efforts are now being directed towards saving the old town of Monterey, the historic site of the first Government of California, and beloved by writers and artists. A dozen homes were destroyed and a large part of the plant of the Associated Oil Company was wiped out by the fire. The flames spread to a tank of 100,000 barrels of gasoline. The fire is spreading. It now threatens the residential section, and also the property of the Standard Oil Company.
