■* REPRESENTATIVE MATCH. TARANAKI DEFEAT WANGANUL EIGHT GOALS TO ONE. The Taranaki men’s representative hockey team defeated Wanganui at Eltham on Saturday by 8 goals to 1. Taranaki showed a marked superiority. The game was of a. highly interesting nature throughout. The teams lined out as follows:Wanganui.—Ourties (goal-keeper) ; Allen, D. Mosen (full-backs) ; Rowntree, Wilson, Cranford (halves) ; Mosen, Phillips, Bromiley, Palmer, Winter (forwards). Taranaki.—T. Bennie (goal-keeper) ; De Forges, C. Davies (full-backs) ; A. Cooper, Page, E. L. Cooper (halves) ; W. Bennie, Pennington, Irwin, Lambie, Phillpotts (forwards). Messrs. A. Fisher and H. C. Johnson were referees. From the opening both teams played with fine dash, but within three minutes Philpotts, who was the outstanding player on the field, scored an easy goal from a clever pass by Cooper, who l in turn received the ball from W. Bennie. Exciting forward play ensued in Wanganui’s territory and their semi-circle was often- invaded. From one of these encounters Pennington scored and Philpotts was unlucky not to have shaken the net a minute later after a fine piece of Individual dribbling. Irwin and Page were associated in a sustained dribling, passing and re-passing bout, and although Wanganui rallied round their goal they could not stop the swift flight of the ball, and Irwin scored the third goal for Taranaki. Practically the whole of the first twenty-five minutes was played in Wanganui’s half, and Lambie scored another great goal before the visitors were given an opening. Combined play by Wilson, Mosen and Bromiley carried the ball into the circle, where Allen nipped in a stroke and scored for Wanganui. Page brotight the ball out of a crowd of flashing sticks and sent it on to Cooper, who transferred to Lambie. Cleveriy evading the hooked sticks of two Wanganui backs, Lambie smashed the ball into the net and the close of the first spell, which came shortly afterwards, saw the scores : —; Taranaki' 5 Wanganui 1 The second spell opened cautiously, but Tafanaki hit harder and though no goals were scored for the first twenty minutes, Taranaki were round the goal nearly all the time and had about a dozen hits over. From one of these frontal attacks Pennington timed his stroke correctly, and before Curtles could stop |it the ball had lodged in the net. De Forges and Page had most of the spade work to do, but were ably supported by the forwards. . In a brilliant run Philpotts carried the ball over half the field and then shot it over to Irwin, who shot home another of his lightning-like strokes and scored beautifully. From a rather acute angle, •Philpotts scored the final goal, and despite a desperate rally by the Wanganui halves, no further score was added, the game ending:— Taranaki 8 Wanganui 1 In the evening the teams were entertained at dinner by the'’ Eltham Hockey Club, when a short toast list was honoured.
