Wanganui, Sept. 13. A big field of eighteen lined up for the Debutante Stakes. Gray’s mount, Arpent, was made a good favourite. Black Cat being at the head of the other quotations. The local bracket, Vaudeville and Adarale, the Kemball trio, Hymestrason, Standard and Race Day, Lady Cavendish and Aropeta were fancied In that order. Without delay they got away in a beautiful line, Anchor hopping out from Arpent, Black Cat, Standard, Vaudeville and Adavale, with Arpent running into the lead. After going half a furlong the favourite was bowling along nicely in front as they came across the top and showed the way into the straight to Black Cat, Vaudeville. Aropeta and Anchor. In the run up the straight Arpent was never seriously troubled to win promisingly by a couple of lengths from Lady Cavendish, who got through on the rails from a long way hack. Bank Draft was a length away, just in front of Black Cat and Anchor, and next to finish were Adavale, Lin Arlington and Vaudeville. OUT-JUMPED EVERYTHING. All the acceptors faced the starter in the Gonville Hurdles, and punters went good and strong for Crown Coin and Brigadier Bill. After they had gone half a mile Empyrean waft In the van, and the local horse led out of the straight from Mbs Mickey, Sansalino, Brigadier Bill and Demand. At the half-mile peg Miss Mickey headed Empyrean, Brigadier Bill, Crown Coin and Demand all being handy. Miss Mickey showed the way Into the straight again to Empyrean, Brigadier BUI, VelocJfonn and Demand. Ovpr the last fence safely. Miss Mickey, who out-jumped everything In the race* went on to' win by a length and a half from Veloclform, who bore Brigadier Bill down in the run home and beat him by a couple of lengths for second money. Crown Coin was fourth and Tetahi and Empyrean next. OUTSIDER'S SURPRISE WIN. The Spring Hack Handicap saw a very keen betting race, Lucrative, Dangle, Ruby Hing, Sky Blue and Bonogne carrying the bulk of the investments, all being evenly backed. The result of the race was a genuine surprise. When they were let go Lady Hamua at once set out to make the pace warm from Lucrative, Siaosd, Esquimaux and Dangle. Before they had gone a furlong Lady Merrlwee fell and upset Papaponga. Lady Hamua was still in charge at. the home turn, the order behind the leader being Bonideer, Sinosl, Lucrative, Dangle and Bonogne. In the run home Siaosl challenged Lucrative and went on to win by a good length. Dangle finished strongly from well back and got up to beat Lucrative by a neck. Ruby Ring, Azecta, Bonideer and Bonogne were the next past the post. The winner was a big outsider. FAVOURITE WINS THE CLASSIC. The race for the New Zealand Eclipse Stakes was an interesting one between five starters. Royal Divorce was always favourite from the opening of operations, and the Imported horse wound up by carrying just on twice as much as Winning Hit, with Avola fairly well backed. The start saw Royal Divorce first into *’ts stride, but as they went out of the straight Subjection ran up to the front, from Royal Divorce, Winning Hit, Avola and Enthusiasm In that order. At six furlongs the three-year-old was a couple of lengths in the lead of Winning Hit, with the favourite another length back. There was no change in the order turning for home, where Enthusiasm had Improved her position. Subjection havfhg half a length lead of Winning Hit, with the favourite lying another length hack. When they straightened up for I ho run home Royal Divorce came along on the rails to rive nothing else a chance and win easily by three lengths from Enthusiasm, with Winning Hit. half a length away thifd. Subjection was another half a length away, with Avola last. A GREAT FINISH. All went, to the post for the Railway Hack and In a great betting race Barn Owl wound up carrying £7O more than Solferange, with good money on hand for Kuhio, Rehutai and The Lamb. La Reve, as usual, would not line out. and the field was sent away without her. At the start The Lamb was chopped out and Bonhomme dwelt. Rehutai led along the hack stretch from Kuhio. Te Kawa. Kila, Logic. Chairman and Barn Owl. and as the field came round the bend into the straight Barn Owl and Rehutai were together, followed closely by Solferange, Chairman, Kuhio and Bonhomme. There was a great race up to the judge, and a slashing finish, firrst one horse and then another being hailed as the winner. A chain from the post Bonhomme got through and was •warded a necjc victory over Kubio, with

Kuhio a head in front of Barn Owl, Rehutai another head away, and The Lamb also well up. The next to finish were Te Kawa, Solferange and Chairman. It was a good performance under difficulties by the winner. PUBLIC'S CHOICE FAILS. Arch Salute failed .to come out for the Higgle Handicap, which attracted eleven runners. There was big money invested on the bracketed ring, and they were backed right down. Bumptious, Musketoon and Yoma came In for fair support. When the tapes rose Stork failed to leave the mark. Going out of the straight Diamond Ring, Black Cibilser, Snatcher, Askari, Bumptious and Musketoon was the order, but at six furlongs Snatcher had charge from Black Cruiser, Diamond- Ring and Bumptious. Going along the back Musketoon, L'Amour and Comical Improved their positions, with the result that Musketoon led into the straight from Diamond Ring, Bumptious, Black Cruiser, L'Amour, Yoma and Askari. In the run to the judge Musketoon held his own under the whip to win by a length from Bumptious, who was a head in front of Diamond Ring. Yoma was fourth and Comical, Askari, Black Cruiser, Snatcher, and L'Amour next. ANOTHER FAVOURITE WINS. Of fourteen starters in the Moutoa Hack Handicap the Banker, with Gray up, went to over four figures, being a pronounced favourite. Support was also forthcoming for Knighthood. Mountain Signal and Shining Armour. Going out of the straight The Banker, Haligan, Quiescent, Interest and Peut Etre were in line, but on the bend the last-named proved best and she showed the way into the back stretch. As they began to cross the top Peut Etre, The Banker, Kilcelt and Master Black were all together, and the quartette showed the way into the straight from Sunshot, Waetea and Pronto. Over the final stages Sunshot buried the opposition for pace and won well by a length and a half from Waetea, with Master Black half a length away. Close up at the finish were Knighthood, Mountain Signal and Ki 1 celt TOO MUCH PACE. All started for the Owen Handicap. Motley was installed a warm favourite, being entrusted with £284 more than Rational, and there was also good money for Fool’s Paradise, Irapuka and Civility. When they were let go the order out was Civility, Soliform, Motley, Awake, and Fool’s Paradise. At the half-mile' the last-named had a small advantage over Motley, with Soliform, Quest, Rational, Irapuka, Civility, and Awake running in that order. As they swung into the straight Motley and Fool’s Paradise were still in the van from Soliform. Awake and Quest.
