INDUSTRY DEPRESSED
IRON, STEEL AND COAL. CONDITIONS IN BRITAIN. SERIOUS EFFECTS FEARED. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright Received Sept. 2, 5.5 p.m. London,, Sept. 2. Diminished exports are having serious effects in the iron and steel trade and in the coal-qiining industry. Numerous north country collieries are closing down, and the position is said to be the worst for forty years. A number of steel works also are closing at Barrow, Middlesborough and elsewhere. An indication of the difficulties in the iron and steel trade was given by the fall in shares in the Bolckow, Vaughan Company, Middlesborough, who are calling up the final 8s per share on 1,860,900 ordinary £1 shares, which were recently selling at Is 6d and have now fallen, holders being willing to pay 2S to anyone who will bear the liability ,of the 8s call. e /
