BOROUGH AFFAIRS.
MEETING OF COUNCIL. IMPROVEMENTS AT THE BATHS. The New Plymouth Borough Council met last night. Present: The Mayor (Mr. F. E. Wilson) and Councillors F. Amoore, J. Kibby, R. A. Large, J. Brown, J. Lobb, F. J. HUI and V. Griffiths. On the recommendation of the baths committee the council decided to instruct the electrical engineer (Mr. Huggett) to procure and instal an electric motor and second-hand pump at the baths at an estimated cost of £l2O, plus fittings, and to procure a small pump, with motor duct fitted, for filling the hot water tanks, at a cost of £26. It was decided also that an additional cooling room be provided for ladies by enclosing part of the laundry at a coat of £l5, and that one new bath be procured and one repaired at a cost of £25. FUNCTIONS TO RAISE FUNDS. Permission was granted to the New Plymouth Choral Society to hold a sacred concert in Pukekura Park on Sunday, September 14, and to take up a collection mx that occasion. Permission was also granted to the Brit--ah Red Cross Society for their canvassers sell surprise packets in the streets on September 5. A deputation from the New Plymouth branch of the Labour Party waited on the council and applied for permission to take up collections at their open air meetings. The council decided that it could not depart from its previous decision not to grant such permission. LIBRARY AND MUSEUM. The report on the library and museum stated , that during the period ending August 21, 22 subscribers had joined and 20 left, a net gain of two. A total of 142 new books were added during the month and were classed as follows: Fiction 105, travel 9, history 4, biography 4, economics 1, general 3, poetry 1, children 15. In addition to the above a purchase was made from private sources of 91 books comprising an excellent selection of fierion and general works, a number of the latter replacing copies of books worn out. In the museum a number of exhibts had been placed in position with suitable labels and a few minor exhibits withdrawn to make room for those of a more interesting nature. It would be advisable for the. museum sub-committee to inspect and deckle what could be withdrawn and stored, as there were now a number of exhibits for which there was no space but which were of such a nature that they should be shown.
GENERAL. A letter was received from Mr. L. Richards, secretary of the Fitsroy Seaside Committee, conveying to the council the comr mittee’s pratitude for its co-operation in the deputation that recently waited upon the New Plymouth Harbour Board. The committee, said Mr. Richards, was oonfiSent that progress had been made, and would suggest that a committee be set up from the council to confer with a committee from the board in an endeavour to decide upon suitable terms for a lease of the property in question at Fitzroy. The Fitzroy committee would do anything it could to help in the matter. On the motion of the Mayor the council decided to take steps under the Public Works Act to acquire a certain area of land fronting on Pioneer Road for the purpose of widening the road. The application of the Tukapa Sportsground Committee to be favourably considered when the council was making its annual grants for parks was held over, with a recommendation for favourable consideration, until the grants were made. A further application by the committee for the loan of a horse and man to operate the mower in making a first spring cut on the ground was referred to Councillor Lobb with power to act. The Paritutu Bowling Club were granted £lO as previously agreed upon for filling in the footpath on the South Road. Mr. Royal Laing was appointed custoof the bsthr
