THOSE WHO FELL.
FITZROY SCHOOL MEMORIAL. ERECTION OF GATES PROPOSED. In order to perpetuate the memory of the old boys of the Fitzroy School who laid down their lives in the war. it has been proposed that memorial gates be erected at the school, and a meeting of old boys and friends interested in this proposal was held last night. As a result it was decided to set up a committee to take steps to raise the necessary funds to erect, the gates.
Mr. O. Johnson, headmaster of the Fitzroy School, stated that, hearing the school committee was about to build a fence in front of the school buildings several of the parents had ' approached him with a proposal that memorial gates be erected at the same time. He bad referred the matter to the school committee, and that body had given its consent. No design had been decid'd on, but it was thought that the gates should have one main entrance and a smaller entrance on each side for the use of the school children. Tablets would be built in for the purpose of carrying the names of the fallen. The concensus of opinion, said Mr. Johnson, was that the district should be. canvassed in a systematic manner. It was considered that the holding of entertainments would bring in very little by the time all expenses had been paid. The following committee was elected: —Messrs B. Armitage, W. H. Abraham, R. Harvey, W. Hall. K. Milne, R. Cleland, A. J. Mack, H. Hawkins, R. Lock, I. Yardley, G. V. Matthews and O. Johnson. Mr. E. A. Lewis was elected secretary. It was decided to call another meeting next Tuesday, when endeavours wi'l be made to form a ladies’ committee.
