DEATHS OF MOTHERS.

GOVERNMENT CAMPAIGN. EMINENT DOCTOR SECURED. AUTHORITY ON MIDWIFERY. t.By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. In connection with the Government’s campaign for the reduction of maternal mortality the Public Health Departmeat has -been fortunate in securing the services of Dr. Henry Jellett, one of the most eminent living authority on midwifery. Although Dr. Jellett’s engagement with the department will be part time only, his advice will be available to the health service at all times. Dr. Jellett was for seven years master of the famous Rotunda Hospital, Dublin. He was also formerly professor of midwifery at Dublin University. It is considered the Department of Health has been singularly fortunate in securing the services of so eminent an ’authority. His text books on midwifery are regarded as standard works. INTEREST IN BRITAIN. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright London, July 1. Seven hundred delegates from thirty countries are attending the Englishspeaking Conference on Infant Welfare. The Minister of Health (Mr. J. Wheatley) thought the first consideration of the conference should be th? care of the mother. He said the insignificant reduction in maternity mortality during the last forty years was engaging the closest attention of his department. At present it was gratifying to find that infantile mortality had fallen 50 per cent, in the past generation.
