PERSONAL.
At the annual meeting of the West End Bowling Club last night a motion of sympathy was passed to the relatives of the late Mr. W. N. Ewiug and Mr. Thom. Furlong, the motion being carried by members standing in silence. A vote of sympathy was also accorded Mr. F. Boulton in the death of his mother.
Mr. and Mrs. T. McPhillips are leaving Manaia, after a residence there of thirty years, and will in future live in New Plymouth. There was an attendance of between four and five hundred residents of the district and friends from all parts of the province at a fni wpl! social in the Manaia Town Hall on Friday evening, Mr. and Mrs. McPhillips having gained the affection and esteem of all who have come in contact with them. They have been noted for their kindly hospitality and the- courtesy which marked their dealings with the rest of the communit}’ as much as for their active participation in all matters affecting the public weal (says the Hawera Star). Mr. McPhillips has been a member c>f the Waimate West County Council during the sixteen years it has been functioning, and has for thirteen years occupied the chairmanship, which position he recently resigned. He was also for four years a member of the road board which governed the district local affairs prior to the institution of the county council. For fifteen years he has been a director of the Kaupokonui Dairy Company, and for the past three years has been the chairman. He was one of the original members of the Taranaki War Relief Association, and has been a member o>f practically every local society during his long residence at Manaia. Several presentations were made on Friday evening to Mr. and Mrs. McPhillips and members of tjieir family.
