THE MEN WHO FELL.
NEW PLYMOUTH MEMORIAL CENOTAPH NEARLY COMPLETED. UNVEILING NEXT MONTH. New Plymouth’s memorial to the men who fell in the Great War—the cenotaph in St. Aubyn Street—is now nearing completion and is expected to be ready by the middle of next month. The unveiling ceremony will probably take place towards the end of July, when His Excellency the Governor-General (Lord Jellicoe) will ’be visiting Taranaki. A definite date for the ceremony will be fixed when His Excellency’s itinerary is made known. With the capping stones yet to be placed in position, the cenotaph already has an imposing appearance, which will be enhanced by the steps which are to surround the -base. It was thought by some that the memorial might be dwarfed by the adjacent hill and the Taranaki Club, but this has not proved to be the case. When the scaffolding is removed a greater semblance of height will be 'given to the cenotaph. Speaking to a Daily News reporter yesterday, the contractor said he expected to have the capping stones in position and the cenotaph itself completed within a fortnight. The trimming and placing of the stone steps, of which there will be three, would take another pionth. In addition to these works, two carved wreaths have to be placed on the cenotaph, one on the Elmont Street frontage and the other on the opposite side. The memorial will be completed with the inscription of the dates 1914-1918 and the words “Their names shall live for ever.”
