DISTRICT NEWS.
AWAKING—MOKAU. (From Our Own Correspondent.) On Saturday, May 17, the Mokau Hall presented an animated scene, the occasion being the Spinsters’ Ball, which was the most successful function held in the district this year. The hall was full to overflowing, and all the available floor space was taken up with dancers. The spinsters desene great credit for the admirable manner in which they conducted the ball, and the bachelors thoroughly enjoyed being the guests of the evening. The road between Tongaporutu and Awakino is in a very bad condition. We need a week’s fine weather to make a trip to town a pleasure. The motor lorries are carting metal from the new pit on the Valley Road, and have made quite an impression between Mokau and Awakino. The o.v. Mahoe, after a very long absence, owing to rough weather, has berthed twice this week at the Awakino wharf. She took out a load of pig* and other produce. The Awakino Dairy Company closed its factory this week for the winter months after a very successful season. Football ia in fuU swing, the test matches for the MacMillar Shield being well under way. Golf is going to be even more popular than last season. It is anticipated that the club wiU have a membership of about forty. The annual meeting was held a short time ago, when Mr. L. R. Calvert was re-elected president, with the following committee: Miss A. Murray (hon. secretary), Mr. W. Northern (treasurer), Miss P. Murray, Messrs. J. Terrill, K. Black, F. Northern and C. McNeice. The club is holding a big day on the links on June 3, to be followed by a dance in the evening. On Friday, May 24, a meeting of the ladies of the districts of Awakino, Mokau and Mokau River was called by the Awa-kino-Mokau Medical Association to discuss ways and means of raising funds for the association. There were present Mesdames Hill, Goodwin, Clifton, Reid, Jones, Calvert, Pepperill, Paynter, T. Cummings, Junr., and Miss McKenzie. It was decided to hold a bazaar in each of the three districts, the first one t-o be held at Mokau, the second at Awakino, and the third at Mokau River. The following general committee was elected: Mrs. Jones (chairwoman), Mrs. Sheen (hon. secretary), Mesdames Clifton McNeice, Sage and Reid. The members of the general committee propose to form sub-committees in their respective districts to work up the bazaars. Mrs. W. Black is visiting her daughter, Mrs. Condon, of Te Kuiti. Mias A Murray has returned from her holidays. We regret to hear that it was necessary for Mrs. McNeice to be called to the bedside of her brother, who has been ill for some time. School has re-opened after the vacation.
